No question, PM wants to re-open abortion debate

OTTAWA -- “If the Prime Minister was serious about not wanting to re-open the debate on reproductive rights, he would have taken action to stop it from hitting the floor of the House of Commons,” says Dave Coles, president of one of Canada’s largest private sector unions.

 The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union president says he does “not believe for a minute that Stephen Harper does not want this issue to be dragged up again.

 “Nothing rattles through Parliament like this without the PM’s support,” says Coles.

 “It’s not often that a Conservative MP’s Private Member’s Bill would not have the support of the Prime Minister.”

 “If the Prime Minister didn’t want this to hit the floor of the House of Commons, it would not be there.

 “CEP and many other unions have been at the forefront of the fight to ensure a woman has a right to choose and that governments don’t turn back the clock on reproductive rights. And we intend to keep up the pressure to expose the Harper’s government’s true agenda.”
