Refinery dreams, pipeline realities

Top of the agenda for Stephen Harper when he visits Beijing next week will be the sale of Canada's crude oil to China. The Conservative government's enthusiasm for exporting this country's raw resources has come under fire for perpetuating our reputation as hewers of wood and drawers of water. New Democrats, such as leadership candidate Brian Topp, have called for raw bitumen from Canada's oil sands to be processed at home before being sent south to the United States or to Asia.

Gateway pipeline unsustainable, energy union tells NEB

OTTAWA -- In its submission to the National Energy Board, Canada's largest energy union says the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline is being built to export more bitumen than we could even produce by 2025.

United Way goes over the top

BRANTFORD, ON -- Lloyd St. Amand says he never doubted that the Brant United Way would reach its fundraising target.

"The community saw the need and came through for the thousands of people who benefit from the 18 agencies supported by the United Way," St. Amand, the campaign's volunteer chair, said Tuesday at a luncheon to announce that $1,531,100 has been raised.

Officials had set a goal this year of $1,525,000, representing a 4.5% increase over last year's total of $1,459,024.

"This achievement is historic for our community," St. Amand said.
