HALIFAX - The $5 million that the Nova Scotia government has promised
for the NewPage Port Hawkesbury paper mill will be needed to keep it in
a semi-ready state, says a report by the court-appointed monitor
overseeing the sale of the operation.
About a dozen former Fraser Papers employees from New Brunswick and Quebec drove through the night to Toronto where they held a rally on Wednesday to protest pension cuts.
The Victims of Brookfield, a group of retirees from former Fraser operations in Edmundston and Thurso, Que., say that up to 40 per cent of their pensions were cut as a result of the restructuring of Fraser Papers.
MIRAMICHI, N.B. – The union representing forestry workers in New Brunswick says the provincial government’s financial package for Arbec Forest Products is a welcome sign of confidence in the forest industry.

Catalyst Paper said it is seeking court-ordered creditor protection
Tuesday after workers at its Crofton pulp and paper mill rejected a new
labour contract that was key to a voluntary restructuring plan.
Catalyst, the largest pulp and paper company on the Coast, is seeking an
order through the B.C. Supreme Court to commence proceedings under the
Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act.

The announcement is the latest in a string of forestry companies that have been forced to seek Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) protection over the past few years.
QUEBEC - The union representing workers at a Quebec City mill owned by White Birch Paper Co. says it's upset with the way the company is handling labour negotiations.
The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union says it only learned of the company's final offer for employees at the Stadacona mill through the media on Friday.
Operations at the mill have been suspended since November and White Birch now says the mill will be closed permanently unless the company can significantly lower salary, pension benefits and other costs.
